Maybe you have eaten food so tasty you believed you could just keel over and die? It is happened to all or any of us once or twice, though probably never to the stage where our eyes have rolled back in our heads. That’s just what happens almost all the time in Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, nevertheless, and it’s equal parts hilarious and inspiring. Who wouldn’t desire to make such delicious food that it’s nearly unbearably great to eat? Food blends with pleasure in some quite outrageous ways in Food Wars, and that is what makes it such a weird and amazing ride.
Food Wars follows one Soma Yukihira, the son of Yukihira Restaurant owner and chef extraordinaire Joichiro Yukihira. The restaurant is home to some of the very flavorful food anyone has ever eaten before, and patrons have it in an almost sexual mode. Upon just tasting the food, it is not unusual to see clothes flying and inhibitions lowered left and right. It is rather odd, but this is the effect Yukihira’s food has on folks. His son follows in his footsteps after Yukihira closes the restaurant down to cook abroad. Soma becomes registered in the elite Totsuki Culinary Academy, but while there he finds he is sorely lacking in the finer points of cooking. It’s there he really becomes a commoner among the elites of the cooking world, but he also has several opportunities to prove himself there with a powerful palate and even more strong cooking abilities. Naturally, this brings a great deal of hate from others who just can’t fathom how this poor little transfer pupil could potentially possess such a different cooking ability. Erina Nakiri, the granddaughter of Totsuki Culinary Academy’s manager, is one such envious person, and she, along with several others throughout the series, are each transferred in several ways by Soma’s cooking, though in some really suggestive manners. Though Food Wars is a shonen series and focuses on actions above most other plot elements, it still finds a lot of time to showcase decadent dishes, acquire the relationships between its individual characters, and ensure that there is enough screen time given to the lewd effect the foods have on their tasters. It may really turn some away, given how raunchy it could be, but in some strange way that’s part of what makes it so entertaining. But unlike quite a few other shows that lean on gimmicks like a crutch to tell their stories, Food Wars doesn’t have to rely on the skeevy pictures where it appears characters are having orgasmic minutes related to the food they’re eating. Underneath all of the strangeness, there is a great deal of heart, also. And that is why you keep on seeing.
One of my special favorite minutes early on was when Sora himself found that his family’s restaurant had been raided, however he was still capable to produce a delicious dish using only the most basic of ingredients, so delicious that the antagonists responsible had to grant to Yukihira’s skill as a cook. It is nearly like something I Had attempt to pull if I were in that same scenario, but I’d have absolutely no clue how to. It is easy to prattle on about what Food Wars has and doesn’t have, but it’s one series that just must be watched to be understood. There’s nothing else quite like it, despite the droves of cooking anime out there, plus it’s a cut above your typical shonen epic. It’s nearly as if you’d taken the shojo timeless Kitchen Princess and cut it using a healthy dosage of Shonen Jump for good measure. For those who haven’t been following it thus far, I highly recommend that you do so. You might even be moved to stake your claim in the cooking world by yourself. You never know.
